South London

Below the river

South London is the area of London south of the River Thames.

Unlike the more connected north, it developed with fewer tube lines and a reputation for being grittier and less central.

The term carries cultural weight—associated with immigrant communities, working-class identity, and in recent decades, grime music and road culture: He's proper South London.

Residents often identify strongly with their side of the river.
