Mahdi

Muslim prophesied savior

Mahdi is an Arabic term meaning "the guided one," referring to a messianic figure in Islamic tradition who will appear before the Day of Judgment to restore justice and righteousness.

The concept varies between Sunni and Shia Islam—Shia Muslims often identify the Mahdi with the hidden Twelfth Imam.

Historically, several leaders have claimed or been declared Mahdi, most famously Muhammad Ahmad in 19th-century Sudan: The Mahdi's forces captured Khartoum in 1885.
