Sunnism
Mainstream Islamic denomination
Sunnism is the largest branch of Islam, comprising roughly 85-90 percent of Muslims worldwide.
Sunnis follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as recorded in the Quran and hadith, and they accept the historical succession of the first four caliphs as legitimate leaders of the Muslim community after Muhammad's death.
This distinguishes Sunnism from Shia Islam, which holds that leadership should have passed directly to Ali, Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law.
