Zakat

Mandatory Muslim almsgiving

Zakat is the Islamic practice of obligatory charitable giving, one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Muslims with wealth above a certain threshold must donate a fixed portion—typically 2.5 percent—annually to support the poor, debtors, and other designated recipients.

The practice is both a religious duty and a means of purifying one's wealth: Have you calculated your zakat for this year?
