Ghadir Khumm
Ghadir Khumm is a location in present-day Saudi Arabia where, according to Shia Islam, the Prophet Muhammad designated Ali as his successor in 632 CE.
The event is commemorated annually by Shia Muslims as Eid al-Ghadir.
Sunni Muslims generally interpret the sermon delivered there as an expression of friendship rather than succession.
