Imamate

Imam-ruled Islamic state

The imamate is the office or period of rule of an imam—a leader in Islam.

In Sunni Islam, imam typically refers to the person who leads prayers at a mosque, making imamate a relatively minor position.

In Shia Islam, the Imamate (often capitalized) refers to the divinely ordained succession of leaders descended from the Prophet Muhammad through Ali, carrying supreme religious and political authority.

The Twelver Shia believe the Imamate passed through twelve imams.
