Salerno is a port city in southern Italy, on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast south of Naples.

It served as the Allied headquarters during World War II after the 1943 Italian campaign landings nearby.

The city is known for its medieval medical school, among Europe's first: the Salerno school of medicine.

Today it's a gateway to the Amalfi Coast.
