Anzio

1944 Italian beachhead

Anzio is an Italian coastal town south of Rome, known primarily as the site of a major Allied amphibious landing in January 1944 during World War II.

The Battle of Anzio became a prolonged and bloody stalemate before Allied forces finally broke out toward Rome.

The name evokes costly beachhead warfare: My grandfather fought at Anzio.
