Sacajawea

Expedition's indigenous interpreter

Sacajawea, also spelled Sacagawea or Sakakawea, was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806 as an interpreter and guide.

She traveled thousands of miles while carrying her infant son, and her presence helped signal peaceful intentions to Native peoples the expedition encountered.

Her image appears on the U.S. dollar coin introduced in 2000.

The spelling varies by region, with North Dakota officially using Sakakawea.
