Egyptian hieroglyphics

Ancient Nile script

Egyptian hieroglyphics are the writing system of ancient Egypt, using pictorial symbols to represent sounds, words, or concepts.

The term often appears redundantly, since hieroglyphic already means sacred carving—the Greeks named them for their appearance on temple walls.

Modern usage treats hieroglyphics as any indecipherable writing: I can't read his hieroglyphics.
