Powhatan Confederacy
Tidewater tribal union
The Powhatan Confederacy was an alliance of Algonquian-speaking tribes in the Virginia tidewater region during the early 1600s.
Led by the paramount chief Wahunsenacah (called Powhatan by English colonists), it included some thirty tribes and perhaps 14,000 people at the time of Jamestown's founding.
The confederacy's interactions with English settlers—including the famous story of Pocahontas—shaped early colonial Virginia before wars and disease devastated its population.
