Osceola

Seminole resistance leader

Osceola is a Seminole leader who resisted U.S. efforts to relocate his people from Florida in the 1830s.

His name, from the Creek word for "black drink crier," became widely known during the Second Seminole War.

He was captured under a flag of truce—an act that provoked national outrage.

The name survives in numerous American place names: counties in Florida, Iowa, and Michigan; cities across the South and Midwest.
