Potawatomi

Keepers of fire

Potawatomi refers to a Native American people originally from the Great Lakes region, particularly around Lake Michigan.

The Potawatomi were part of the Council of Three Fires alliance with the Ojibwe and Odawa peoples.

Today, several federally recognized Potawatomi nations exist, including the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in Oklahoma and the Forest County Potawatomi in Wisconsin.

The word also refers to their Algonquian language: She is learning to speak Potawatomi.
