waterdog
Mudpuppy's close cousin
A waterdog is a salamander that retains gills throughout life, particularly the mudpuppy of North American lakes and streams.
The term also describes a person comfortable in water—a strong swimmer or someone who works on boats.
In some regions, waterdog refers to a small catfish used as bait.
He's been a waterdog since childhood, happiest when he's near the river.
