Manchurian

Relating to Manchuria

Manchurian refers to Manchuria, a historical region in northeastern China, or to its people and languages.

The Manchu people established the Qing dynasty that ruled China from 1644 to 1912.

In popular culture, a Manchurian candidate is someone brainwashed to act against their own side—from the 1959 novel and films about a programmed assassin.

The phrase now describes any person secretly controlled by hostile forces: Critics called him a Manchurian candidate for the opposing party.
