Li
Element number three
Li is a Chinese concept central to Confucian philosophy, referring to ritual propriety, proper conduct, and the customary norms that govern social behavior.
It encompasses everything from formal ceremonies to everyday etiquette—how to greet elders, conduct a funeral, or behave at court.
Li represents the external expression of virtue through appropriate action: He studied li to understand proper comportment.
The term also appears in other contexts: li is a traditional Chinese unit of distance (about half a kilometer), and Li is one of the most common Chinese surnames.
