cesium

Soft alkali metal

Cesium is a soft, silvery-gold metallic element, atomic number 55.

It is among the most reactive of all metals—it ignites spontaneously in air and reacts explosively with water.

Cesium's most familiar application is in atomic clocks, where the vibration of cesium atoms provides the standard definition of a second.

Also spelled caesium, especially in British English.
