Fenian

Irish republican revolutionary

Fenian refers to members of a 19th-century Irish republican organization dedicated to ending British rule in Ireland through armed rebellion.

The movement, active in Ireland and among Irish emigrants in America, staged uprisings and raids.

Today Fenian survives mainly as a sectarian slur in Northern Ireland and Scotland, used by unionists and Protestants against Irish Catholics or nationalists: Fenian scum.

The term remains deeply offensive in those contexts.
