I-bar

Steel building support

An I-bar is a structural beam with a cross-section shaped like the letter I—a vertical web with horizontal flanges at top and bottom.

This design provides strength while minimizing weight, making I-bars standard in construction for supporting floors, roofs, and bridges: The warehouse ceiling was held up by massive steel I-bars.

Also called an I-beam.
