Germanic tribes

Teutonic ancestral peoples

Germanic tribes were the ancient peoples of northern Europe who spoke related languages ancestral to modern German, English, Dutch, and Scandinavian tongues.

These groups—Goths, Vandals, Franks, Saxons, Angles, and others—migrated across Europe during the decline of the Roman Empire, eventually forming the kingdoms that became medieval European nations.

The term appears in historical discussions of the Migration Period and the fall of Rome: The Germanic tribes gradually settled throughout the former Roman provinces.
