Highland Clearances
Crofters forced out
The Highland Clearances were the forced displacement of Scottish Highlanders from their ancestral lands during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Landlords evicted tenant farmers to make way for sheep grazing and other commercial uses, often burning homes to prevent return.
The clearances scattered Highland communities to coastal villages, cities, and overseas—particularly Canada, Australia, and the United States.
The term carries strong connotations of injustice and cultural destruction: Her family came to Nova Scotia during the Clearances.
