Jacobite risings

Scottish succession wars

The Jacobite risings were a series of rebellions in Britain during the late 17th and 18th centuries aimed at restoring the Stuart monarchy after James II was deposed in 1688.

The term comes from Jacobus, Latin for James.

The most famous risings occurred in 1715 and 1745, the latter led by Bonnie Prince Charlie and ending in defeat at Culloden.

The Jacobite risings reshaped the Scottish Highlands.
