Cumberland Gap

Historic mountain pass

Cumberland Gap is a natural passage through the Appalachian Mountains where Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee meet.

The gap served as a crucial route for westward migration in the 18th and 19th centuries, allowing settlers to cross the mountain barrier into Kentucky and beyond.

Daniel Boone famously widened it into the Wilderness Road.

The name now also refers to the town at the gap and appears in folk songs celebrating frontier expansion.
