Haussmannization
Wholesale city rebuilding
Haussmannization is the large-scale urban renovation that transforms crowded, medieval city centers into modern layouts with wide boulevards, uniform building heights, and improved infrastructure.
The term comes from Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, who radically redesigned Paris in the mid-19th century, demolishing narrow streets and old neighborhoods to create the city's characteristic broad avenues and grand facades.
The word often carries critical undertones—implying displacement of poor residents and erasure of historic character in favor of aesthetic order and easier crowd control: Critics accused the mayor of Haussmannization, pushing out longtime residents for luxury development.
