flâneur

Leisurely city observer

A flâneur is someone who strolls through city streets without destination, observing urban life with detached curiosity.

The term comes from French and carries connotations of leisure, aestheticism, and philosophical wandering—the flâneur treats the city as a spectacle to be savored: He spent his afternoons as a flâneur, drifting through the arrondissements.

The concept is associated with 19th-century Paris and the writings of Baudelaire.
