gas lighting
Pre-electric street lamps
Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where someone makes another person question their own perception, memory, or sanity.
The manipulator denies events occurred, insists the victim misremembers, or dismisses their concerns as irrational: He kept gaslighting her until she doubted her own experience.
The term comes from a 1944 film in which a husband dims the gaslights while denying his wife's perception that they've changed.
Now broadly applied to any sustained attempt to undermine someone's grasp of reality.
Usually spelled as one word: gaslighting.
