Immune system protein

HLA-B27 is a genetic marker—a specific protein found on the surface of cells—associated with certain autoimmune conditions, particularly ankylosing spondylitis and other inflammatory arthritis diseases.

Testing positive for HLA-B27 doesn't guarantee disease, but significantly increases risk: The doctor ordered an HLA-B27 test after the MRI showed spinal inflammation.
