tissue typing

Donor-recipient matching test

Tissue typing is the laboratory process of identifying proteins on cell surfaces to determine compatibility between donor and recipient for organ or bone marrow transplants.

These proteins, part of the immune system, determine whether a body will accept or reject foreign tissue.

Close matches reduce the risk of rejection: The tissue typing showed her brother was a near-perfect match.
