Smaug

Smaug is a dragon in J.R.R.

Tolkien's novel *The Hobbit*—a golden-red fire-drake who conquered the Lonely Mountain and hoarded the dwarves' treasure for nearly two centuries.

Smaug is cunning and arrogant, conversing in riddles with Bilbo Baggins before his famous vulnerability is discovered.

The name has become shorthand for any greedy guardian of wealth: He sits on that investment portfolio like Smaug on his gold.
