Flatheads

Bitterroot Salish people

Flatheads names several North American fish with flattened heads, especially the flathead catfish found in rivers and lakes of the central United States.

The word also refers to a type of screw or bolt with a flat top designed to sit flush with a surface: Use flathead screws so they don't snag.

Historically, Flatheads designated certain Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest, though the name was a misnomer—they did not practice head-flattening.
