noodling

Aimless guitar playing

Noodling has two distinct meanings.

One is catching catfish by hand—reaching into underwater holes and letting the fish bite your arm, then pulling it out.

This is a regional practice in the American South and Midwest.

The other meaning is casual, improvisatory playing on a musical instrument: He spent an hour noodling on the guitar.

Both suggest an unstructured, exploratory quality.
