Emirate

Gulf state, capitalized

An emirate is a territory ruled by an emir—an Arab prince or military commander.

The term most commonly appears in reference to the United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven such territories on the Persian Gulf.

Historically, emirates were independent political units; today the word describes both sovereign states and administrative divisions within them.
