war documentaries
Filmed battle accounts
War documentaries are nonfiction films about armed conflicts—their causes, conduct, and aftermath.
The genre ranges from propaganda pieces made during wartime to retrospective examinations decades later: Ken Burns's war documentaries draw millions of viewers.
They may focus on battles, soldiers' experiences, civilian suffering, or political decisions.
The best combine archival footage with personal testimony to convey what combat and its consequences feel like.
