David Koresh

David Koresh was the leader of the Branch Davidians, a religious sect based near Waco, Texas.

Born Vernon Howell, he claimed to be a messianic figure and took the name Koresh from Cyrus the Great.

In 1993, a 51-day standoff with federal agents ended in a fire that killed Koresh and approximately 75 followers, making "Waco" shorthand for government overreach and apocalyptic confrontation.
