Council of Trent

Catholic reform council

The Council of Trent was a major assembly of Catholic Church leaders held in Trent, northern Italy, between 1545 and 1563.

Convened in response to the Protestant Reformation, it clarified Catholic doctrine, condemned Protestant teachings, and instituted reforms addressing corruption and abuse within the Church.

The council's decrees shaped Catholic practice for centuries and defined the Counter-Reformation.
