Vatican II

Sixties Catholic reform

Vatican II, also called the Second Vatican Council, was a major gathering of Catholic Church leaders held from 1962 to 1965 that modernized many church practices.

Called by Pope John XXIII, it introduced reforms including allowing Mass to be celebrated in local languages rather than Latin, encouraging dialogue with other Christian denominations and world religions, and emphasizing the role of laypeople in the church.

The council is often invoked in debates between traditionalist and progressive Catholics: Her parish still follows the pre-Vatican II liturgy.
