Diet of Worms
Imperial assembly, 1521
The Diet of Worms was a formal assembly of the Holy Roman Empire held in 1521 at Worms, Germany, where Martin Luther was called to recant his writings challenging Catholic Church authority.
Luther refused, reportedly declaring Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise.
The confrontation marked a pivotal moment in the Protestant Reformation.
A diet in this sense is a legislative assembly; Worms is the city's name.
