Columbus Day
Explorer's federal holiday
Columbus Day is an American holiday on the second Monday of October, commemorating Christopher Columbus's 1492 arrival in the Americas.
It has become controversial, with critics noting Columbus's role in colonization and violence against indigenous peoples.
Some jurisdictions have renamed it Indigenous Peoples' Day.
The office is closed for Columbus Day.
