bank holiday
National day off
A bank holiday is a public holiday when banks and most businesses are closed.
The term is standard in Britain, where it refers to nationally designated days off—Boxing Day, Easter Monday, and several others scattered through the year.
The shops will be closed for the bank holiday weekend.
In American usage, the phrase is less common, though it appeared notably during the 1933 emergency closure of banks under Roosevelt.
