Government-designated day off
A federal holiday is a day designated by the national government as an official holiday, when government offices close and employees receive paid leave.
In the United States, federal holidays include Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Private employers aren't required to observe federal holidays, though many do: The bank is closed for the federal holiday.
