Big Dipper

Northern sky scoop

The Big Dipper is a pattern of seven bright stars in the constellation Ursa Major, visible year-round in the Northern Hemisphere.

Its shape resembles a ladle or water dipper—four stars form the bowl, three the handle.

The two stars at the bowl's edge point toward Polaris, the North Star.

In British English, the same formation is called the Plough.
