roller coaster
Looping thrill ride
A roller coaster is an amusement park ride consisting of a train of cars traveling along a track with steep drops, sharp curves, and sometimes loops.
The experience—thrilling highs followed by stomach-dropping plunges—makes roller coaster a natural metaphor for anything with dramatic ups and downs: The stock market has been a roller coaster this year, an emotional roller coaster.
