escort fighter
Bomber's aerial bodyguard
An escort fighter is a military aircraft assigned to protect bombers or other vulnerable planes during missions.
Unlike interceptors designed for quick defensive scrambles, escort fighters accompany formations deep into enemy territory, requiring long range and endurance: P-51 Mustangs served as escort fighters over Germany.
The role was critical in World War II, when unescorted bombing raids suffered devastating losses.
