Archimedes' screw

Helical water lifter

An Archimedes' screw is a device for raising water, consisting of a spiral blade wrapped around a cylinder set at an angle.

As the cylinder rotates, water trapped between the blade's turns is lifted upward.

Ancient in origin, it remains useful for irrigation and drainage.

The design also appears in modern applications like grain conveyors and some industrial pumps.
