Andersonville

Civil War camp

Andersonville refers to two related things in American history.

The Andersonville Prison was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia during the Civil War, notorious for its brutal conditions—nearly 13,000 Union soldiers died there from disease, malnutrition, and exposure.

The name has become shorthand for wartime atrocity and the horrors of captivity.

Andersonville is also a neighborhood in Chicago, known for its Swedish heritage and historic character.
