Alexander Pope

English Augustan poet

Alexander Pope was an eighteenth-century English poet, considered the foremost verse satirist in the language.

His works include *The Rape of the Lock*, *The Dunciad*, and his translations of Homer.

Pope mastered the heroic couplet and produced quotable lines that have entered common speech: Hope springs eternal, A little learning is a dangerous thing, To err is human, to forgive divine.
