Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe was an English writer of the early eighteenth century, best known for *Robinson Crusoe* (1719), often called the first English novel.
The story of a castaway surviving alone on an island established a template for survival narratives.
Defoe also wrote *Moll Flanders* and worked as a journalist, pamphleteer, and spy.
