wold
Treeless rolling hills
A wold is an area of open, rolling upland—hilly country without trees.
The word survives mainly in British place names like the Cotswolds and the Yorkshire Wolds, where it describes chalk or limestone hills with sparse vegetation.
Outside these geographic references, wold is archaic and rarely encountered in modern speech.
