downland
Rolling chalk country
Downland is open, gently rolling chalk or limestone hills, especially in southern England.
The terrain is typically treeless, covered in grass, and used for grazing sheep: We walked across the Sussex downland.
The word comes from the Old English word for hill, which also gives us the Downs—the chalky uplands of Kent and Sussex.
