waveoff

Gestured landing abort

A waveoff is a signal to abort an approach or attempt—originally in aviation, where a landing officer waves off a pilot whose approach is unsafe, sending them around for another try.

The term extends to any last-second cancellation or rejection: The quarterback got a waveoff from the sideline.

To wave off is to dismiss or decline: She waved off my offer to help.
